The City Council presents Spirit of Portland Awards each year to individuals and organizations who make outstanding contributions to our community. Please nominate an individual, business, organization, neighborhood or business association that has created a project, service or event that has helped Portland shine! Nominations will be accepted in an individual’s native language.
How do I nominate someone?
Step One: Fill in the information below for the organization or individual you want to nominate. They shouldn’t have been awarded a Spirit of Portland Award in the last 10 years.
Step Two: Submit a one to two-page narrative describing how your nominee exemplifies any of the categories and attach it to this nomination form. Use a 12-point font or greater. The Selection Committee will not review additional pages.
Step Three: Submit this form with your narrative to the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, please see contact information below.
Award recipients will be chosen based on the categories included on the next page.

2017 Spirit of Portland Awards Category Descriptions
City Commissioners present Spirit of Portland Awards each year to individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions to communities in Portland. Nominate those who have helped Portland shine! Ten additional awards are chosen by the Mayor and four City Commissioners.
Outstanding Individual Leadership Awards
Community Leader of the Year (2 awards): Recognizes individuals who provide our communities with a special service, that demonstrates responsiveness, creativity and civic values while raising cross-cultural awareness and engaging historically underrepresented communities.
Young Leader of the Year (1 award): Recognizes an individual 24 or younger who provides our communities with a special service that demonstrates responsiveness, creativity and civic values while engaging young people and historically underrepresented communities.
Elder Leader of the Year (1 award): Recognizes an individual 65 and older who has been demonstrating responsiveness, creativity and civic values while engaging cross-cultural collaboration and engaging historically underrepresented communities.
City Employee of the Year (1 award): Recognizes a City employee whose work promotes access to City government while demonstrating responsiveness, creativity and civic values focused on cross-cultural collaboration and engaging historically underrepresented communities.
Outstanding Organization Leadership Awards
Community Group/Organization of the Year (1 award): Recognizes a group that demonstrates responsiveness, creativity, civic values and cross-cultural awareness through its services.
Neighborhood Association of the Year (1 award): Recognizes a Neighborhood Association that demonstrates responsiveness, creativity, civic values and cross-cultural awareness through its services.
Business of the Year (1 award): Recognizes a business that demonstrates responsiveness, creativity, civic values and cross-cultural awareness through its services.
Business District Association of the Year (1 award): Recognizes a Business District Association that demonstrates responsiveness, creativity, civic values and cross-cultural awareness through its services.
Outstanding Individual or Organization Leadership Awards
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award (1 award): Recognizes an individual(s) and/or Organizations who promotes Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and demonstrates responsiveness, creativity, civic values and cross-cultural awareness through its services. Equity in Practice Partnership of the Year (1 award): Recognizes a City bureau and its New Portlander partners for developing and delivering a valuable City service to a previously underserved community, thereby raising our general level of civic engagement and uplifting livability for all neighbors.
Access and Disability Justice Award (1 award): Recognizes an individual(s) or organization(s) whose work creates greater access or equity for the disability community, with a focus on efforts led by people with disabilities and work that centers people of color, LGBTQ people, or others who experience intersecting identities.
Sandy Diedrich Environmental Stewardship of the Year (1 award): Recognizes an individual(s) and/or organization(s) who demonstrate outstanding dedication to environmental stewardship.
